Islamabad: Former President of Pakistan General Pervez Musharraf died in a hospital in Dubai after a prolonged illness. According to a news of Pakistan’s Geo News, former President General Pervez Musharraf died at the age of 79 in a hospital in Dubai. His family confirmed this on Sunday. Former military ruler Pervez Musharraf, who was ill for a long time, was undergoing treatment at an American hospital in Dubai.

General Pervez Musharraf was born on August 11, 1943, in Delhi during the British Raj. He received his commission on 19 April 1961 from the Pakistan Military Academy at Kakul. After getting the commission, Musharraf joined the Special Service Group of the army. Pervez Musharraf also participated in the 1965 and 1971 wars against India. He was promoted to the rank of General in 1998 and then General Pervez Musharraf took over as the Chief of Army Staff (COAS). A year later, on October 12, 1999, General Musharraf took over the power of Pakistan through a coup.

After assuming the reins of power, General Pervez Musharraf became the longest-serving President of Pakistan. He was elected President through a referendum in 2002 and remained in office till 2008. It was during Musharraf’s tenure that Pakistan accepted the proposal of the Taliban to become an ally of America against terrorism after the incident of the 9/11 attack. Musharraf was accused of resorting to unconstitutional measures in November 2007 to remove Supreme Court judges from office. After this, a big movement of lawyers started. Pervez Musharraf resigned from the post of President on August 18, 2008, after the movement intensified.

General Pervez Musharraf was undergoing treatment in Dubai since March 2016. Last year, Musharraf’s close aide and former information minister Fawad Chaudhry had said that former Pakistan President Musharraf’s condition was critical and he was on a ventilator. Significantly, former military ruler Musharraf, who ruled Pakistan from 1999 to 2008, was declared a fugitive in connection with the assassination of former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto and the murder of the cleric of Lal Masjid. He was also facing trial for sedition for suspending the constitution in 2007.
