Islamabad: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chief and former Prime Minister Imran Khan have suffered another major setback. The Election Commission of Pakistan on Tuesday (August 8) disqualified former PM Imran Khan for five years after he was convicted in the Toshakhana case, according to Pak media reports.
The Election Commission of Pakistan cited Saturday’s court order and disqualified Imran Khan for five years under Article 63 (1) (h) of the Constitution read with Section 232 of the Election Act, 2017.
Imran Ahmed Khan Niazi is disqualified for a period of five years and is also de-notified as a candidate elected from constituency NA-45 Kurram-I, the notification said.
An Islamabad court convicted Imran Khan (70) of ‘corruption’ in the Toshakhana case. He was found guilty and sentenced to three years’ imprisonment. Also imposed a fine of Rs 100,000. After this, Imran was arrested by the Punjab Police from his residence in Zaman Park, Lahore.
The court found Khan guilty of corrupt practices by willfully and intentionally concealing benefits accruing to the national exchequer. The court said that Imran Khan committed fraud while providing information about gifts received from Toshakhana which later proved to be false and incorrect. His dishonesty has been established beyond doubt.
