It is noteworthy that in the Pravasi Bharatiya Summit held in Indore in January 2022, a three-tier agreement was signed between Cottage and Village Industries, the Textile Committee, the Government of India, and NABARD for action related to the GI tag. The government is also submitting applications for GI tags for other products.

What is the GI tag?
GI Tag is the abbreviation of Geographical Indication Tag in India. GI protection is very important and necessary for an agro-based economy like India. The Parliament of India passed the Geographical Indications (Registration and Protection) Act 1999. This act came into force in September 2003. It is given by the Controller General of Trade Marks, Designs, and Trade Marks Chennai. It is noteworthy that every product certified by GI is affixed with a GI tag. Due to these reasons, the trade of GI-tagged products is continuously increasing in the international market.
