New Delhi: Famous French writer Dominique Lapierre has passed away. Dominique Conchon-Lapierre, wife of 91-year-old Dominique Lapierre, told the French newspaper that at the age of 91, Dominique Lapierre breathed her last in Paris.

Dominique Lapierre was equally popular in India as in France or other countries. Dominic had a special attachment to India and due to this attachment, he composed a classic work like ‘Freedom at Midnight’ on India’s independence. His novel ‘City of Joy’ based on the life of Kolkata’s rickshaw puller has also been very popular. In view of his popularity, the Government of India honored Dominique Lapierre with the Padma Bhushan in 2008.

Born on July 30, 1931, Dominique Lapierre’s many compositions have been very popular. Six books written in collaboration with American author Larry Collins have sold nearly 50 million copies.

Dominique Lapierre also wrote the book ‘City of Joy’ based on the life of a Kolkata rickshaw puller. This book has been very popular in India. A film has also been made on the City of Joy. This book has been so popular that the city of Kolkata came to be known as “The City of Joy”. Dominique Lapierre’s books ‘Beyond Love’ (1990) and ‘A Thousand Sons’ (1999) have been international best sellers.
