New Delhi: The mysterious suicide of Haryana Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) Y Puran Kumar has shocked the nation and raised serious questions about what drove the respected senior IPS officer to take his own life. On Tuesday afternoon, October 7, 2025, the 52-year-old officer allegedly shot himself in the head at his Sector 11 residence in Chandigarh, leaving behind a detailed 9-page suicide note that has become the center of investigation.
The Tragic Incident Details
Around 1:30 PM on Tuesday, Y Puran Kumar instructed all his security personnel to leave the premises before proceeding to the soundproof basement of his residence, where he sat on a chair and fired a fatal shot to his head using his Personal Security Officer’s service revolver. The incident occurred in the basement room that Kumar had personally converted into a soundproof office, which explains why no one heard the gunshot.
His younger daughter discovered her father’s body approximately one hour later when she went downstairs around 2 PM, finding him slumped on the sofa, drenched in blood. She immediately alerted the security staff, who then informed Chandigarh Police. Chandigarh Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Kanwardeep Kaur confirmed that Kumar died on the spot from the self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Shocking 9-Page Suicide Note Surfaces
Police recovered crucial evidence from the scene, including a ‘will,’ a comprehensive 9-page ‘final note,’ and the weapon used in the incident. According to police sources, the extensive suicide note mentions names of several current and serving IPS officers, though authorities have not yet disclosed specific details pending forensic examination.
The Central Forensic Science Laboratory (CFSL) team was called to the scene to collect physical and electronic evidence. Complete videography and photography of the entire crime scene was conducted, and the weapon used has been seized for forensic analysis. Authorities have stated that the contents of the note will only be made public after thorough forensic verification.
Corruption Case Against Gunman: The Turning Point
A major development has emerged that may explain the timing of Kumar’s tragic decision. Just two days before his death, an FIR was registered at the Urban Estate police station in Rohtak against Head Constable Sushil Kumar, who served as Y Puran Kumar’s personal gunman.
According to Rohtak police sources, Sushil Kumar had been demanding a monthly bribe of Rs 2 to 2.5 lakh from a liquor businessman operating in the Rohtak area. The case came to light when an audio clip surfaced as evidence, following which Sushil was arrested.
Gunman Names Senior Officer During Interrogation
During police interrogation while in custody, Sushil Kumar made a shocking confession that sent ripples through the investigation. The gunman admitted that he had been demanding the monthly bribes at the behest of his superior officer, Y Puran Kumar. This allegation directly implicated the senior IPS officer in the corruption case.
On Tuesday evening, the same day Kumar died by suicide, Rohtak police presented Sushil Kumar before the court and he was sent to judicial custody. The timing of these events the gunman’s court appearance and Kumar’s death occurring on the same day—has raised serious questions about whether the IPS officer felt cornered by the corruption allegations.
The Punishment Transfer That Preceded Tragedy
On September 29, 2025, the Haryana government transferred Y Puran Kumar from his prestigious posting as Inspector General of Rohtak Range to the relatively lower-profile position of Inspector General at the Police Training Centre (PTC) in Sunaria, Rohtak. Within the police department, this transfer was widely perceived as a punishment posting.
Kumar was scheduled to assume charge at the Police Training Centre on Wednesday, October 8 just one day after his death. At the time of the incident, he was on leave following his transfer. The combination of the punishment transfer and the emerging corruption case involving his gunman appears to have created immense pressure on the senior officer.
Wife on Official Visit to Japan
At the time of the tragic incident, Y Puran Kumar’s wife, senior IAS officer Amneet P Kumar of the Haryana cadre, was in Japan as part of an official delegation led by Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini. She was expected to return from her official tour on October 8, following which a board of doctors will conduct the post-mortem examination.
The couple has two daughters the elder daughter is studying abroad, while the younger daughter lives with the family in Chandigarh and was present at home when the incident occurred.
Profile of Y Puran Kumar
Y Puran Kumar was a 2001-batch IPS officer of the Haryana cadre, originally from Andhra Pradesh and belonging to the Scheduled Caste community. Born on May 19, 1973, he was an engineering graduate with a B.E. in Computer Science and had also completed his graduation from IIM Ahmedabad. He was due to retire on May 31, 2033.
Throughout his distinguished career spanning over two decades, Kumar held several important positions within the Haryana Police and was considered a respected officer of the Haryana cadre. He was particularly known for his outspoken nature and willingness to expose irregularities within the system.
Kumar had a history of taking legal battles against his own department and had once filed allegations of discrimination against Manoj Yadav, who was then the Director General of Police of Haryana, approaching the court in that matter. His colleagues describe him as someone who always prioritized rules, transparency, and honesty in his work.
Investigation Underway
Senior police officials including IG Pushpendra Singh, SSP Kaur, and SP City Priyanka reached the scene immediately after being informed. The investigation is currently ongoing, with authorities working to piece together what exactly drove Kumar to take this extreme step.
Police teams and forensic experts have collected extensive evidence from the scene, including the weapon, documents, and electronic devices. The body has been sent for post-mortem examination, which will be conducted by a board of doctors after Kumar’s wife returns from Japan.
The suicide note flagged job-related issues and dissatisfaction, according to initial police statements. However, the detailed contents of the 9-page note, particularly the names of IPS officers mentioned in it, remain under investigation. Authorities are examining whether the corruption case against his gunman, the alleged involvement of his name in the bribery operation, and the recent punishment transfer collectively created unbearable pressure on the senior officer.
The case has sent shockwaves through the Haryana Police department and raised important questions about stress management, accountability mechanisms, and support systems for senior officers facing professional challenges. As the investigation progresses, more details are expected to emerge that may provide clarity on what led this respected IPS officer to end his life.
