Let’s know about the history and importance of World Red Cross Day
History
The importance of the Red Cross Society is hidden in its history. The Swiss merchant Jean Henry Dunant witnessed the Battle of Solferino in Italy in 1859. In which a large number of soldiers were killed and injured. None of the armies had clinic settings to take care of injured soldiers. Dunant formed a group of volunteers who brought food and water to soldiers wounded in the war. Not only this but after treating them, this group also wrote letters to their families.
Three years after this incident, Henry published his experience in the form of a book ‘A Memory of Solferino’. In the book, he suggested the establishment of a permanent international society.
A society that can treat people injured in war. The one who works for the people not on the basis of citizenship of any country but on humanitarian grounds. His suggestion was implemented the very next year.
The Geneva Public Welfare Society formed a committee in February 1863, on whose recommendation a world conference was held in October 1863. It was attended by representatives of 16 nations, in which many resolutions and principles were adopted. Subsequently, in 1876, the committee adopted the name International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC).
