New Delhi: The war between Israel and the Palestinian militant group Hamas has entered its 17th day, with no sign of a ceasefire. The death toll has risen to about 6,000, with Israel accounting for 1,300 and Gaza accounting for at least 4,700, according to CBS. In the midst of the crisis, the Pentagon said that the US had sent a team of military advisors, including a Marine Corps general, to Israel. The advisors will assist in war planning, but will not participate in combat operations.
The Pentagon said that the leader of the US military team is Lieutenant General James Glynn of the Marine Corps, who has extensive experience in fighting against ISIS. He helped coordinate special operations forces in the campaign against the terrorist group. Glynn also fought in Fallujah, Iraq, which is considered one of the fiercest urban battles. The advisors will help Israel devise a strategy to defeat Hamas and minimize collateral damage.
US National Security Council spokesman John Kirby said that Glynn and other military officers are seasoned professionals. He said they have a lot of experience in war and military operations. He also accused Iran of fueling the attacks. He said Iran is actively supporting and instigating the violence. He said Iran wants to exploit the conflict for its own interests.

The US has been providing arms and financial assistance to Israel since the start of the war. Israeli media reports have also claimed that the US will send thousands of its troops to Israel, which will boost its military presence in the region. These include the deployment of two US aircraft carriers and their associated escort ships, which will carry about 15,000 troops. According to the reports, a task force comprising about 4,000 marines and sailors will also be deployed. In addition, about 2,000 support troops have been put on alert and told to be ready to leave within a few days.
