Kolkata: The Trinamool Congress (TMC) on Monday registered victory in all the four municipal corporations Bidhannagar, Siliguri, Chandernagar, and Asansol in West Bengal. This information has been obtained from the data available on the website of the State Election Commission. TMC has recaptured Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation by winning 39 out of 41 seats while opposition parties Bharatiya Janata Party and Marxist Party (CPI-M) could not even open their account here.
Congress has won one seat and an independent candidate has won in one ward. In Chandernagar, TMC won 31 out of 32 seats while CPI(M) won one seat. Snatching the Siliguri Municipal Corporation (MMC) from the CPI(M)-led Left Front was the icing on the cake for the ruling party, winning 37 out of 47 seats here. According to the Election Commission data, the BJP has achieved opposition status by winning five seats while the Left Front has moved to the third position. It got only four seats and Congress got one seat.
In Siliguri, TMC got 78.72 percent votes while BJP and CPI(M) got only 10.64 percent and 8.5 percent votes respectively. Buoyed by the victory in all the four municipal corporations, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee announced that party leader Gautam Deb would be the next mayor of the SMC. Deb has won by a margin of 3,000 votes.
In Asansol, TMC has won 66 seats out of 106 and is leading in five wards while BJP has won five seats and CPI(M) and Congress two seats each. Banerjee thanked the people for her party’s “massive victory” and described it as a victory of the people. Elections to the four municipal corporations were held on February 12 in which 953 candidates tried their luck.
