Ujjain: In a deeply disturbing incident from the temple town of Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh, a man allegedly raped a woman scrap collector after making her consume alcohol. The crime took place in the Agar Naka area and came to light when a video of the assault went viral on social media. The accused, identified as Lokesh, has been arrested, according to Kotwali Area’s City Superintendent of Police (CSP) Om Prakash Mishra.

Details of the Crime

The incident occurred on Wednesday when Lokesh, who had promised to marry the woman, coerced her into drinking alcohol before raping her. He then threatened her to keep silent about the assault and fled the scene. Shockingly, some passersby recorded the crime instead of intervening to stop it.

Police Action

After the woman regained her senses and the effect of the alcohol wore off, she filed a complaint. Lokesh was subsequently arrested. CSP Om Prakash Mishra confirmed the details, stating, “Accused Lokesh promised to marry her, made her drink liquor, and then raped her on Wednesday. Some people who were passing by shot videos of the incident instead of stopping the crime. Lokesh later fled from the spot. After the woman filed a complaint when the effect of alcohol wore off, Lokesh was arrested”.

Political Reactions

The incident has sparked outrage and political backlash. Congress leader Jitu Patwari criticized the BJP-led state government, alleging a complete breakdown of law and order in Ujjain. “Dharamnagari Ujjain has been tarnished once again! This time too, the black mark has been put on the forehead of the law and order of Ujjain. I am in shock that now in Ujjain rapes have started happening in broad daylight, in the open street. This is possible only when the effect of law and government ends completely!” Patwari wrote on social media.

He further added, “If this is the condition of the Chief Minister’s hometown, then the condition of the rest of the state can be easily understood. The atrocities being continuously committed against Dalit and tribal women can also be felt!”.

This incident has not only highlighted the vulnerability of women in the region but also raised serious questions about the effectiveness of law enforcement and public safety measures in Madhya Pradesh.
