Kanker: In a significant development ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections in Chhattisgarh, security forces have reported a substantial victory in the Naxal-affected district of Kanker. On a recent Tuesday, an intense encounter led to the elimination of 29 Naxalites, while also resulting in injuries to three members of the security forces.
The clash occurred in the dense forests under the jurisdiction of the Chhotabethiya police station. A combined force comprising the Border Security Force (BSF) and the District Reserve Guard (DRG) was deployed on an anti-Naxal operation within the Chhotabethiya region. The operation took a violent turn when the patrolling team came under heavy fire from the Naxalites, leading to injuries to two soldiers initially, followed by a third.
In what is being hailed as a strategic blow to the Naxalite command structure, the security forces confirmed the death of a top Naxalite commander during the encounter. The aftermath of the confrontation saw the recovery of the bodies of all 29 Naxalites, along with a significant cache of weaponry, including seven AK series rifles and three light machine guns. The ongoing search operations by the security forces continue to press against the Naxalite presence in the area.
This encounter comes at a critical time, just days before the first phase of voting in Chhattisgarh, scheduled for April 19 in the Bastar Lok Sabha constituency. In anticipation of the elections, over 60,000 security personnel have been stationed across the district to ensure a peaceful electoral process. The subsequent phases of voting will take place on April 26 and May 7, covering various constituencies across the state.
The injured soldiers are reported to be out of danger, reflecting the heightened preparedness and resilience of the security forces. This year has seen an intensification of anti-Naxal operations, with a total of 50 Naxalites neutralized so far. The ongoing conflict, however, has also led to the loss of 18 civilian lives and six security personnel, underscoring the persistent challenges faced in the region.
The security forces’ commitment to maintaining peace and order during the election period remains steadfast, as they continue to safeguard the democratic process amidst the challenges posed by Naxalite activities.
