A Russian Su-27 fighter jet intercepted and hit the propeller of the US military’s MQ-9 Reaper surveillance drone on Tuesday, causing it to crash into the Black Sea, news agency Reuters reported. The event was condemned by the US military as unsafe.
The US military said in a statement, “Two Russian Su-27 jets intercepted the US spy drone and one of them collided with it at 7:03 am (0603 GMT). Several times before the collision, the Russian fighter planes refueled the MQ-9 and flew in front of it in unsafe maneuvers.
US Air Force General James Hecker said, “The US MQ-9 aircraft was conducting routine operations in international airspace. During this it was intercepted and rammed by a Russian aircraft, resulting in a crash. The MQ-9 was a total loss.
