New Delhi: If you are planning to buy gold after March 31, then this news is useful for you. The government has decided to change the rules for buying and selling of gold and jewelry. According to the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, after March 31, 2023, jewelry bearing the four-digit Hallmark Unique Identification (HUID) cannot be sold as hallmarked. Instead, only jewelry with a 6-digit alphanumeric number as a hallmark can be sold.
4 digit hallmarked gold is invalid
Actually, the Consumer Ministry said that this decision has been taken regarding the confusion of 4 and 6-digit hallmarking. According to the changed rule of buying and selling of gold, now only alphanumeric hallmarking of 6 numbers will be valid. If gold jewelry is sold without this new hallmark, it will not be valid. The ministry told that after the implementation of the new rule, the 4-digit hallmarks will also be completely closed.
Learn about HUID numbers
To identify gold or any kind of jewelry made from it, Hallmark Unique Identification (HUID) number is coined on it. This HUID number is a 6-digit alphanumeric code. When the jewelers upload the information of that jewelry on the BIS portal, then from this number you can get the information related to the purchased jewelry. Such codes are very effective in dealing with gold fraud cases.
