New Delhi: The Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) entered the 2024 Indian Premier League (IPL) season with aspirations of overturning their previous disappointments, but the narrative remains unchanged. With seven matches into the tournament, RCB has faced defeat in six, putting their playoff aspirations in jeopardy.

On Monday, April 15, Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) set a monumental IPL record, posting a colossal total of 287 runs for 3 wickets against RCB. This score stands as the highest in the tournament’s storied history. Despite a valiant chase, RCB fell short, managing 262 runs and missing out on a much-needed victory.

The defeat against SRH was particularly disheartening for RCB, as the match was crucial for their campaign. SRH’s batting lineup, bolstered by Travis Head’s explosive century and Enrique Klaasen’s swift fifty, left RCB’s bowlers in disarray. In pursuit of the mammoth target, contributions from Virat Kohli (42 runs), captain Faf du Plessis (62 runs), and a spirited 83 runs from Dinesh Karthik were not enough to cross the finish line.

RCB’s path to the playoffs is now fraught with challenges. Positioned at the bottom of the points table, the team must secure victories in all of their remaining seven matches to advance—a feat that seems nearly insurmountable. This latest loss marks their fifth consecutive setback, following defeats to teams from Chennai, Kolkata, Lucknow, Rajasthan, Mumbai, and now Hyderabad.

Former cricketer Irfan Pathan commented on RCB’s predicament, stating that the team must clinch victories in all forthcoming matches to progress to the next round of the IPL. Given the competitive nature of the league, accomplishing this task is daunting for any team. Should RCB manage to secure a spot in the playoffs, it would indeed be akin to witnessing a miracle.
