Chandigarh: A special court of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Monday convicted Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh and four others in the 19-year-old murder case of former Dera manager Ranjit Singh. Was sentenced to life imprisonment.
The Panchkula court had on October 8 convicted Ram Rahim and four others – Krishanlal, Jasbir Singh, Avtar Singh, and Sabdil – in the murder case. CBI special prosecutor HPS Verma said, “The court has sentenced the five convicts to life imprisonment.”
Ranjit Singh was shot dead on 10 July 2002 in Khanpur Kolian village of Kurukshetra, Haryana. He was murdered for his suspected role in circulating an anonymous letter. In this letter, it was told how the Dera chief sexually abuses women in the Dera headquarters.
According to the CBI charge sheet, the Dera chief believed that Ranjit Singh was behind the circulation of this anonymous letter and hatched a conspiracy to kill him. Gurmeet Ram Rahim was sentenced to 20 years imprisonment for raping two followers in 2017 and is currently lodged in Rohtak’s Sunaria Jail.
