Queen Elizabeth II appoints Liz Truss new prime minister

London: Queen Elizabeth II on Tuesday formally appointed Conservative Party leader Liz Truss as Britain’s new prime minister. Truss has become the third woman prime minister of the country. She arrived at her Balmoral Castle residence in Aberdeenshire, Scotland, to meet the 96-year-old Queen. The Queen formally asked Truss to form a new government. Earlier, outgoing Prime Minister Boris Johnson submitted his resignation to the Queen.

The Queen is at her Aberdeenshire residence for her annual holiday. The 47-year-old will then arrive at 10 Downing Street in London to deliver her first speech as prime minister, followed by the announcement of the names of some key cabinet ministers. Truss defeated former finance minister Rishi Sunak on Monday in the race for the post of UK prime minister. Attorney General Suella Braverman is believed to be the only Indian-origin lawmaker in the top wing of the truss.

The Goa-origin Braverman is likely to replace former Home Minister Priti Patel, who resigned on Monday. Confirming this, Bharatvanshi Patel, who played a key role in Boris Johnson’s cabinet as his close aide, said, “I will stay behind and take up the many policies and issues for which I am both inside and outside the government.” I’m standing.” Sunak said after his defeat in the race for leader of the Conservative Party that he was proud of his campaign.

He indicated that he does not plan to work in a truss government. In the new cabinet, business affairs minister Kwasi Quarteng is running for finance minister, while education minister James Cleverley could be given the foreign minister’s responsibility, which Truss had previously handled himself. Apart from these, along with British Pakistani Sajid Javid, Nadeem Jahavi can also be given a big responsibility.

Defense Minister Ben Wallace, International Trade Minister Anne-Marie Trevelyan, and Culture Minister Ann Dorji are believed to remain in their positions. Truss’s close friend Therese Coffee could replace Steve Berkeley as health minister. According to some reports in the UK media, there could be a major change in Downing Street along with the change in the cabinet, and some senior officials in Johnson’s tenure may be shown the way out or sent to other places.
