New Delhi: The bill seeks to incorporate the provisions of Section 36 of the Legal Practitioners Act, 1879 in the Advocates Act, 1961 to eliminate the role of brokers in court premises. This section empowers the courts to prepare and publish lists of brokers. The bill also repeals the Legal Practitioners Act, of 1879, which is one of the oldest acts in the country. The bill was passed by the Rajya Sabha in the last monsoon session and by the Lok Sabha on Monday by voice vote.
The bill was discussed in detail in the Lok Sabha and the Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal responded to the queries and suggestions of the members. Meghwal said that the government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi has decided that those colonial laws that have become useless will be repealed. He said, “The purpose of bringing this amendment is completely pure. He also said that 1486 colonial laws were abolished in the current government, whereas not a single such law was abolished during the 10-year tenure of the UPA government.
The bill was introduced in the Lok Sabha by the Law Minister on July 19, 2023. The bill was referred to the Standing Committee on Personnel, Public Grievances, Law and Justice, which submitted its report on August 11, 2023. The committee recommended the passage of the bill with some minor amendments. The bill was then taken up by the Rajya Sabha on August 23, 2023, and passed without any changes. The bill was then sent to the Lok Sabha for its approval, which was given on Monday.
