Karachi: Pakistani authorities have released 198 Indian fishermen, who were lodged in a jail in Karachi on charges of illegal fishing in Pakistani waters, and handed them over to the Indian authorities at the Wagah border. The fishermen were released from Malir Jail in Karachi on Thursday evening. Malir Jail Superintendent Nazir Tunio said that he has released the first batch of jailed Indian fishermen and two more batches of fishermen will be released in June and July.
“We released 198 jailed fishermen on Thursday while another 200 and 100 fishermen will be released later,” he said. Tunio said that 200 Indian fishermen were to be released from Malir jail on Thursday but two of them died due to illness.
Pakistan’s former Prime Minister Imran Khan, on the other hand, has blamed Army Chief General Asim Munir for his arrest on May 9 and distanced himself from the violence taking place across the country following his dramatic arrest in a court here. Khan expressed these views during an informal interaction with media persons at the premises of the Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Friday, The Dawn newspaper reported on Saturday.
The High Court on Friday granted protective bail to Khan for two weeks in a corruption case and restrained him from arrest in any case registered anywhere in the country till Monday. Three different benches of the IHC granted relief to the 70-year-old chief of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), who was taken to court amid tight security.
