Bhubaneswar: The specter of disease continues to cast its shadow over the country, with recent outbreaks of monkeypox, bird flu, and dengue. Odisha, in particular, is grappling with a rapid increase in cases of bird flu and dengue, prompting health authorities to sound the alarm.

Dengue Menace Grips Odisha

  • Widespread Impact: The number of dengue cases in Odisha has surged, reaching approximately 2,000 across the state. Khordha district stands out as the epicenter, reporting around 500 positive cases. Other affected areas include Sundargarh, Rourkela, Bolangir, and Cuttack.
  • Preventive Measures: The state government, in collaboration with district administrations, has swung into action to curb the spread of dengue. Efforts include targeted diagnosis, treatment, and preventive measures. Bhubaneswar, the capital city, has witnessed 700-800 cases, but proactive steps such as mosquito control, fogging, and public awareness campaigns have helped manage the situation.
  • Tragic Loss: Jhingia Oram, wife of Union Tribal Affairs minister Jual Oram, succumbed to dengue while undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Bhubaneswar. Her death underscores the urgency of tackling the outbreak effectively.

Bird Flu Outbreak in Pipili, Puri

  • H5N1 Variant Confirmed: Pipili area in Puri district has been hit by bird flu, specifically the H5N1 variant of avian influenza. Over 800 cases have been reported, leading to the culling of more than 5,000 chickens. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation and collecting samples for testing.
  • Swift Action: An animal response team, deployed by the state government, is on the ground in the affected area. Their mission: to assess the situation, collect samples, and prevent further spread. Disease Control Officer Jagannath Nanda reported that more than 300 chickens were culled on Saturday, with an additional 4,700 on Sunday. The toll may rise, as up to 20,000 chickens could face culling.
  • Compensation: The government has announced compensation of Rs 20 and Rs 60 per chicken for small and large birds affected by the disease.
