Mumbai: Auto-taxi drivers in Mumbai have threatened to go on strike from September 26. It is noteworthy that the meeting with the government regarding the hike in fares and other demands has proved unsuccessful. On September 13, there was a meeting of the State Industries Minister Uday Samant with the office bearers of various auto-taxi unions of Mumbai.
The Mumbai Taximen’s Union, Mumbai Taxi Association, and Autorickshaw Unions have decided to go on indefinite strike from September 26 in protest against the failure to honor the commitment made by industrial minister Uday Samant to revise the taxi and auto-rickshaw fare,” said A L Quadros, the leader of Mumbai Taxi Association and Autorickshaw Unions.
The general secretary of the Mumbai Taximen Union, A.L. Quadros said that the meeting had assured take a decision in 10 days, but no action was taken. Around 48,000 taxi drivers and around two lakh auto rickshaw drivers in Mumbai are demanding a hike in fares. Quadros said that our demands are not being considered by the government, so we have decided to go on an indefinite strike.
Rent hike demand
The unions have demanded an increase of Rs 10 in the fare from the state government. It was argued that since the last fare revision in March 2021, the price of CNG has increased by a total of Rs 32. Due to the hike, taxi and auto-rickshaw drivers are losing Rs 250 to 300 per day.
