New Delhi: In a significant development, Delhi Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena has recommended a National Investigation Agency (NIA) inquiry against Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal. The recommendation comes in response to a complaint alleging that the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), led by Kejriwal, received substantial funds amounting to $16 million from extremist Khalistani groups. These funds were allegedly linked to efforts to secure the release of Devendra Pal Bhullar and promote pro-Khalistani sentiments.
Background and Allegations
- Delhi Excise Policy Case: The Enforcement Directorate (ED) alleges that the Delhi excise policy was intentionally designed with loopholes to favor AAP leaders and promote cartel formations. AAP leaders are accused of receiving kickbacks from liquor businesses in exchange for preferential treatment.
- Financial Scam: The ED claims that the “scam” involved giving wholesale liquor businesses to private entities with a fixed margin of 12%, in return for a 6% kickback.
- Influence on Elections: Kejriwal is also accused of influencing elections held in Punjab and Goa in early 2022.
AAP’s Response
The Aam Aadmi Party has claimed that the allegations are part of “yet another conspiracy against Kejriwal at the behest of BJP.” The party alleges that the Lieutenant Governor’s recommendation is politically motivated due to the ongoing Lok Sabha elections.

AAP leader and Delhi minister Saurabh Bhardwaj said, “This is another conspiracy against Kejriwal at the behest of the BJP. They are losing on all seven seats in Delhi and are scared of defeat in the Lok Sabha elections.”
The matter is now under scrutiny, and the Supreme Court is set to consider granting interim bail to Kejriwal in light of the ongoing elections. Kejriwal remains lodged in Tihar jail in connection with the money laundering case related to Delhi Excise Policy.
