LONDON: In his first address to the nation as King of Britain, King Charles III said on Friday that he was deeply saddened by the passing of Queen Elizabeth II and would continue her work of serving the nation “for the rest of her life”. Charles took the throne after the death of the Queen on Thursday. He has been given the title of ‘King Charles III’.
Queen Elizabeth II died at Balmoral Castle on Thursday at the age of 96. The nation of Britain has begun a time of royal mourning, with Parliament paying tribute to the Queen. King Charles addressed the people for the first time since the death of Queen Elizabeth. During this he also became emotional. He said the Queen served Britain. His passing is a time of sorrow for the entire country.
“Today I repeat this promise of a lifetime of service,” said Charles. During the speech, a picture of the late Queen was placed on his desk. Charles’ speech was broadcast on TV and at St. Paul’s Cathedral, where some 2,000 people are taking part in a tribute meeting in memory of the Queen. These include Prime Minister Liz Truss and other members of the government.
King Charles III said that on her 21st birthday in 1947, Queen Elizabeth II pledged in a broadcast from Cape Town to the Commonwealth that she would devote her life to serving her people. It was much more than a promise, it was a deeply personal commitment that defined his entire life.
