BEIJING: Speaker of the House of Representatives, the lower house of the US parliament, Nancy Pelosi on Sunday confirmed her visit to four Asian countries this week. However, he has not made any mention of the Taiwan visit. China considers Taiwan as its part and has warned about Pelosi’s possible visit.

Pelosi said in a statement that she would lead a parliamentary delegation to visit Singapore, Malaysia, South Korea, and Japan to discuss trade, the COVID-19 pandemic, climate change, security, and democratic governance.

Doubts remain about the Taiwan visit
Pelosi has not yet confirmed media claims about her possible trip to Taiwan.

If Pelosi visits Taiwan, it will be the first visit by a top US-elected representative to the island country since 1997. Chinese President Xi Jinping, in a phone conversation with his US counterpart Joe Biden on Thursday, warned against any “foreign interference” in China’s handling of Taiwan.

China said- Taiwan does not have the right to establish foreign relations
China said that Taiwan has no right to establish foreign relations. He said he sees the US leader’s visit as a move to encourage Taiwan to make official its nearly independent status for decades.

The Biden administration has not urged Pelosi to avoid traveling to Taiwan, although it has tried to reassure Beijing that it is not a cause for controversy and that if such a visit does take place, it would not signal a change in the US policy.

Pelosi said in the statement, “Recognizing that a free and prosperous Indo-Pacific is vital to prosperity in our country and around the world, the United States under the strong leadership of President Biden remains firmly committed to strategic engagement in the region.” ”
