New Delhi: The entire state of Maharashtra is celebrating the remarkable achievement of Swapnil Kusale, who secured the bronze medal in the men’s 50m rifle 3 positions event at the Paris 2024 Olympics. This historic win marks the first individual Olympic medal for a person from Maharashtra in 72 years.

Birthplace and Early Journey

Swapnil Kusale hails from Kambalwadi village in Kolhapur district, West Maharashtra. Born on August 6, 1995, in Pune, Swapnil’s family background includes farming and teaching. His sports journey began in 2009 through the Maharashtra Government’s sports development program, Krida Prabodhini. After rigorous physical training, he found his passion in shooting.

Overcoming Challenges

In a remarkable turn of events, Swapnil secured an Olympic quota place during the 2022 World Championships in Cairo, Egypt, where he finished fourth in the men’s 50m rifle 3-position event. His journey to the podium was not without hurdles. A chronic tonsil problem caused him extreme pain, fever, and weakness. Despite these challenges, Swapnil persevered, ultimately earning his spot in the top two during the 2024 trials.

Inspiration from MS Dhoni

Swapnil looks up to several shooting icons, but he shares a special connection with former Indian cricket captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni. Like Dhoni, Swapnil worked as a ticket collector in the Indian Railways, drawing inspiration from Dhoni’s unwavering focus and ability to perform under pressure. Dhoni’s journey continues to inspire Swapnil as he celebrates his own Olympic success.
