LONDON: Britain’s prime ministerial candidate Rishi Sunak has said he would rather lose than win by making false promises about his plan to deal with the economic crisis. The former UK finance minister said he was committed to working for the welfare of vulnerable families. Sunak and his rival British Foreign Minister Liz Truss are at loggerheads over the issue. The Truss has promised a tax cut, which former finance minister Sunak has claimed will only benefit the rich families and not those who need it the most.
In an interview with the BBC, Sunak said, “I would rather lose than win by making false promises.” Both the candidates are being questioned by members of the Conservative Party. These members will vote in the election. During this, the issue of rising inflation and prices seems to be dominating. Referring to his work as Finance Minister during the lockdown imposed due to the Kovid-19 global pandemic, Sunak said that ‘people can judge me on the basis of my work. When the bills were coming in at over £1200 earlier this year, I made sure that the bills for the weaker sections come in at around £1,200.
