MUMBAI: Heavy rains lashed several parts of Mumbai on Saturday, leaving two people dead after they were washed away in a nullah. Also, incidents of traffic jams, tree falls and short circuits were also reported during this period. Municipal bodies and police officials gave this information.
An official said that the incident of death took place in Govandi in the afternoon. Later the fire department and police personnel pulled out the bodies. According to officials, Chembur received 80.04 mm of rainfall during the day, while Vikhroli received 79.76 mm, Sion 61.98 mm, Ghatkopar 61.68 mm, and Matunga 61.25 mm.
A statement issued by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation in the evening said that 11 trees were uprooted due to rain, while seven incidents of short circuits were reported till 8 pm. The eastern suburbs of the metropolis received 69.86 mm of rain, while the western suburbs received 73.57 mm, the statement said.
Police said traffic was diverted to SV Road after the Andheri subway was waterlogged, while vehicles were seen crawling in areas like BD Road, around Mahalaxmi Temple and Asalpha, Sakinaka Junction, and Gaffar Khan Road near Worli Sealink. Similar conditions were witnessed at Kurla, Santacruz, and SV Road, while water-logging was reported from Dadar TT, Sion Road, Tilak Nagar, and Dahisar Subway.
Mumbai full of water
It has been raining continuously since last Saturday morning. Due to this, water logging has been created on the roads in many areas. Due to this its adverse effect was also seen in the speed of traffic. Sites like Chembur, Vikhroli, Sion, Ghatkopar, Matunga, and Dahisar received maximum rainfall on Saturday. Andheri-Dahisar subway had to be closed several times during the day for traffic.
Orange alert in the state for the next 24 hours
With this, the IMD or the Meteorological Department has issued an Orange Alert in the state for the next 24 hours. Currently, Konkan, Vidarbha, West Maharashtra, Solapur, Jalgaon, Kolhapur, Ahmednagar, Washim, and Pune are also experiencing continuous heavy rains. IMD has issued an Orange alert for Raigad and Ratnagiri and a Yellow alert for Palghar, Mumbai, Thane, and Sindhudurg. An Alert has been issued. Monsoon has been predicted to be active in the next 48 hours in the entire Maharashtra. At the same time, IMD has predicted heavy rains in different areas of Maharashtra for the next 5 days.
