New Delhi: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has sounded an orange alert for several states Uttarakhand, Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, and Telangana warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall on July 8. This alert comes as a low-pressure system over eastern India continues to drive intense monsoon activity across the country.

The following states are expected to experience heavy to very heavy rainfall:

  • Uttarakhand: Risk of landslides and road blockages, especially in hilly districts.
  • Punjab & Haryana: Heavy showers with thunderstorms and lightning.
  • Rajasthan & Madhya Pradesh: Torrential rains, particularly in eastern and central regions, with some districts under red alert for extremely heavy rainfall.

Delhi-NCR: Yellow Alert, Light to Moderate Rain

Delhi and the National Capital Region are under a yellow alert today. Residents can expect:

  • Generally cloudy skies throughout the day.
  • Light to moderate rainfall with occasional thunderstorms and lightning.
  • High humidity levels, reaching up to 70% in the morning.
  • Temperature relief: Minimum temperatures are expected to be 1–3°C below normal, while maximum temperatures will be 2–4°C lower than average, hovering between 33–35°C.

Monday’s rainfall brought much-needed respite from the heat, with the city recording a sharp drop in temperatures and improved air quality. However, the rain has also led to waterlogging and traffic disruptions on key roads, especially during peak hours.

Extended Forecast and Precautions

The IMD forecasts that the current spell of rain will continue in Delhi through the week, with moderate showers and thunderstorms likely until July 13. Other affected regions may see persistent heavy rainfall, increasing the risk of flooding and landslides, particularly in hilly and low-lying areas.

Precautionary Measures:

  • Residents in orange alert areas should avoid unnecessary travel and stay updated on local advisories.
  • Fishermen are advised not to venture into the sea.
  • Commuters in Delhi should plan for possible traffic delays due to waterlogging.
