
New Delhi: Bindeshwar Pathak, founder of Sulabh International, passed away on Tuesday (August 15) due to a heart attack. He was 80 years old and breathed his last at Delhi’s AIIMS hospital.
According to the official spokesperson of AIIMS Delhi, Pathak had developed chest pain and was being brought to the AIIMS emergency in Delhi when he suffered a cardiac arrest at around 1.30 pm. His body has been kept in the mortuary of AIIMS.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has condoled the death of Bindeshwar Pathak. He said on Twitter, Dr. Bindeshwar Pathak’s death is a deep loss for our country. He was a visionary who worked extensively for social progress and empowering the underprivileged.
He further said, Bindeshwar ji made it his mission to build a clean India. He provided tremendous support to the Swachh Bharat Mission. His passion for cleanliness was always visible during our various interactions. His work will continue to inspire many, he said. Significantly, in a rare honor in 2016, New York City declared April 14 as Bindeshwar Pathak Day in recognition of the contribution made by the Indian social worker and founder of Sulabh International to improving the lives of those engaged in the most inhumane conditions. .

Sulabh has built over 1.3 million household toilets and over 50 million government toilets based on an innovative design. Apart from building toilets, this organization is leading a movement to discourage manual scavenging of human waste.
Indian Railways joined hands with Sulabh International in November 2016 and appointed Bindeshwar Pathak as the brand ambassador of the Swachh Rail Mission, taking forward its efforts to keep railway premises clean.
