New Delhi: Former DRDO Director Arunachalam died in the US on Wednesday. His family gave this information in a statement. He was 87 years old. Modi wrote on X (formerly Twitter), “Dr. VS Arunachalam’s death leaves a great void in the scientific community and the strategic world. He is highly appreciated for his passion for knowledge, research, and rich contribution to strengthening India’s security capabilities. Condolences to his family and well-wishers. om Shanti.

Arunachalam had served at Bhabha Atomic Research Center (BARC), National Aeronautical Laboratory, and Defense Metallurgical Research Laboratory. Arunachalam was DRDO chief and scientific advisor to the Defense Minister from 1982 to 1992. For Arunachalam’s contribution to science and technology, he was awarded the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Award (1980), the Padma Bhushan (1985), and the Padma Vibhushan (1990).
