Dispur: The Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption of Assam Police on Thursday caught Meenakshi Kakati Kalita, Assistant Commissioner of State GST Office, red-handed while accepting a bribe of Rs 4000. Also, more than 65 lakh rupees were recovered from his house in the search.
A complaint was made against Kalita, alleging that he had demanded Rs. 10,000 was demanded from the complainant for the re-activation of GST online functions.
An official said, “The complainant approached the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption to take necessary legal action against the officer who was reluctant to pay the bribe. Accordingly, a trap was laid by a team of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Investigation Team at Kar Bhawan in Guwahati and the officer was caught red-handed soon after accepting a bribe amount of Rs.4,000 from the complainant.
During the post-arrest searches, the team recovered Rs 65,37,500 from Kalita’s house. A case has been registered against him under the Prevention of Corruption Act, of 1988 (as amended in 2018).
