New Delhi: Delhiites are going to get a big shock today because the power subsidy will end in the country’s capital Delhi from today. In the Arvind Kejriwal government, Energy Minister Atishi said that from today i.e. Friday, the electricity subsidy of 46 lakh families in Delhi will end. Accusing the LG, he said that the decision of the cabinet to increase the power subsidy is pending before the Lieutenant Governor. Please tell us that about 48 lakh families in Delhi have applied for an electricity subsidy.
According to the news agency, Delhi’s Energy Minister Atishi said that the electricity subsidy of about 46 lakh people of the city will end from Friday, as Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena has not yet approved the file for giving subsidy to the consumers. It is believed that now there may be a dispute between the Delhi government and the Lieutenant Governor on this issue. The minister said that he has sought a meeting with Saxena on the issue but has not received any response from the LG’s office so far.
Minister Atishi said, ‘The electricity subsidy we give to 46 lakh people will stop from today. From Monday people will get increased bills without subsidy.’ The minister said, ‘The Delhi cabinet has approved the extension of electricity subsidy for the year 2023-24, but the file is still pending in the LG office. Until the file is approved, we cannot give a subsidy. I had also sought time from the LG office to discuss the matter but it has been more than 24 hours and I have not been given time. The file has also not been returned yet.
Atishi said that the file was sent a few days ago and the reply is still awaited. He said that the budget for this subsidy has been passed by the assembly. The government has money for subsidies but we cannot spend it. Explain that in Delhi, the AAP government provides free electricity to consumers with a monthly consumption of 200 units. Those consuming 201 to 400 units per month get a 50 percent subsidy at Rs.850.
In fact, last year Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal announced that electricity subsidies would be provided only to those consumers who would apply for them. According to official figures, out of over 58 lakh domestic consumers, over 48 lacks have applied for electricity subsidies. The AAP government has allocated Rs 3250 crore for power subsidy in its budget for 2023-24.
