New Delhi: The unveiling of Doordarshan News’ new logo has ignited a political firestorm just two days after its release. The state-run broadcaster’s decision to shift from its classic ruby red emblem to a vibrant orange has been met with fierce debate and allegations of “saffronisation” by opposition parties.
Government officials argue that the change was made to enhance visibility and attract more attention, noting that red and orange are more striking color combinations. They also pointed out that several private channels employ similar color schemes.
However, the timing of the logo’s debut has raised eyebrows, coming as it does just before the Lok Sabha elections. Critics suggest that the move may infringe upon the Model Code of Conduct, which governs electioneering in India.
The controversy escalated when West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee condemned the change as “unethical and illegal,” urging the Election Commission to intervene and revert to the original blue logo, asserting that the new color violates the electoral code of conduct.
Doordarshan News took to social media to announce the change, promising a fresh start while maintaining its core values. The channel’s post emphasized its commitment to accuracy, factual reporting, and truth over sensationalism, encapsulating its ethos with the tagline “DD News – Bharosa Sach Ka” (DD News – Trust in Truth).
Former Prasar Bharati CEO and current AITC Rajya Sabha MP Jawhar Sircar led the charge against the broadcaster, criticizing the choice of saffron for its branding and questioning the neutrality of the state-funded network. Sircar’s remarks underscored concerns about the potential misuse of public broadcasting for political gain.
