Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh has been granted a 40-day parole, allowing him to come out of jail for over a month while he continues to serve his sentence in the 2017 sexual assault case. This is not the first time the Dera chief has been given extended temporary release, he has received multiple paroles and furloughs in the past on medical grounds, personal reasons, and religious occasions linked to the sect.

Ram Rahim was convicted in 2017 for sexually assaulting two female followers of Dera Sacha Sauda. The CBI court in Panchkula sentenced him to (10) years imprisonment in each case in August (2017), and also imposed a fine of (Rs\,30.20) lakh. The conviction had sparked widespread violence in parts of Haryana and Punjab at the time, after which authorities tightened security around the sect’s strongholds.

According to the CBI’s case, the sexual assault incidents took place in (1999).
