Nagpur: Five prisoners, including the underworld Don Arun Gawli, who have been locked up in the Nagpur Central Jail, have been found to be Coronavirus Positive. Gawli is serving life imprisonment in a case related to the murder of Shiv Sena leader Kamalakar Jamsandekar.

Jail Superintendent Anoop Kumre said that Gawli and four other prisoners have been found infected with the Corona virus and the jail doctors are treating them. Kumre said that Gawli has been found infected with the virus after falling ill on Monday.

Tried politics too
The Nagpur bench of the Bombay High Court gave parole to gangster Arun Gawli, who was serving a sentence in jail in February 2020, in a 2008 murder case. Gawli also tried his hand in politics before being punished. He is lodged in Nagpur Central Jail. His lawyer Rajendra Daga told PTI-language that Gawli had sought parole on the grounds that he wanted to take care of his wife as they were about to undergo an operation.

A bench of Justice Sunil Sukre and Justice Madhav Jamdar directed Gawli to be released on parole as per ‘merit and rule’. The state police had opposed Gawli’s plea, saying that releasing him could create law and order problems. Gawli’s lawyer said that the court, however, took cognizance that the gangster had been released earlier and there was no problem related to law and order.
