Court directive to Delhi Police, provide copy of charge sheet to Kanhaiya and others

New Delhi: A Delhi court on Monday directed the Delhi police to give a copy of the charge sheet filed in the 2016 sedition case to Jawaharlal Nehru University Students Union (JNUSU) former president Kanhaiya Kumar and nine others. Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM) Pankaj Sharma listed the case for April 7 to examine the documents related to the case and also granted interim bail to the seven accused not yet arrested in the case.

Before the charge sheet was filed, seven people, including Aqib Mujib, Umar Gul, Rais Rasool, Basharat Ali, Khalid Bashir, were not arrested. They had filed a petition in the court for bail. The court granted him bail on the condition of depositing a personal bond of Rs 25,000 and a surety of the same amount. While issuing the court summons, Kumar, Anirban Bhattacharya and the other seven accused were also present in the premises in addition to Omar Khalid, who was already taken into police custody in the Delhi riot case.

Earlier, the court had taken cognizance of the charge sheet. Kanhaiya Kumar and JNU alumni Umar Khalid and Anirban Bhattacharya are accused of shouting anti-India slogans. The seven other accused in the case against whom the chargesheet has been filed include Kashmiri students Aqib Hussain, Mujib Hussain, Munib Hussain, Umar Gul, Rais Rasool, Basheer Bhat and Basharat Ali.

Some of them are students of JNU, Aligarh Muslim University and Jamia Millia Islamia, all of whom have been booked under sections 124A, 323, 471, 143, 147, 149, 120B of the Indian Penal Code.
