Islamabad: Senior Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) leader and former senator Abdul Rehman Malik died on Wednesday due to complications related to Covid-19. His spokesperson confirmed this. Malik was 70 years old. He is survived by his wife and two sons.
Malik was infected with the coronavirus in January this year and had breathing problems. He was put on a life support system since the beginning of this month. Malik’s spokesperson Riyaz Ali Turi tweeted on Wednesday, “Sad to inform that former Home Minister and senior PPP leader Abdul Rehman Malik has passed away.”
Before joining politics, Malik was working as a special agent in the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) of Pakistan and was promoted to Additional Director General in 1993. Malik was the security chief of late Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto from 2004 to 2007. In 2008, the then Prime Minister Yousuf Gilani appointed him as the Home Minister.
