Dhaka: Bangladesh government on Monday sent a fourth group of Rohingya Refugees from Myanmar to the new island developed in the Bay of Bengal. The refugees were sent to the island despite human rights groups calling for the process to be stopped. Bangladeshi Navy Commander Muzammil Haq told reporters that about 2,000 Rohingyas residing in the refugee camps of Cox’s Bazar have been sent to the newly developed Bhasan Char Island. The island has been developed specifically to house one lakh Rohingyas from neighboring Myanmar.
More than 7,000 refugees have been sent to the island since the process began in December. The Bangladesh government says that good arrangements have been made for the refugees and the island has been developed to be a better place to live.
However, human rights groups have protested the move, saying that some people are being sent to the island contrary to their wishes. At the same time, the government says that refugees have been sent only after their consent.
