MUMBAI: The Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) has said that people above the age of 75 years can travel free of cost in its buses from Friday. A release by MSRTC quoted Shekhar Channe, vice-chairman and general manager of the state-run transport undertaking, as saying that those eligible for this free travel scheme would get the fare amount back if they had booked their tickets before August 26.
People in the age group of 65 to 75 years will get a 50 percent discount on ticket fares on all types of bus services operated by the undertaking, the release said. The free travel facility can be availed by showing identity documents like an Aadhar card, PAN card, driving license, or voter ID card, the release said.
The release also said that this facility is not available for city buses of MSRTC and will be for travel within the state limits. The new facility was announced by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis in the state assembly a few days ago.
MSRTC has a fleet of more than 16,000 buses and before the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in March 2020, around 65 lakh people travel daily in these buses.
