BEIJING: China has named bridges and villages along a highway connecting Xinjiang and Tibet provinces after four of its military personnel who were killed in a clash with Indian troops in the Galwan Valley in 2020. Official media gave this information on Friday.

The names of these soldiers now appear on road signs along the G-219 highway from the Tibet Autonomous Region to the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, according to the state-run Global Times. The news said that apart from the hometowns of those soldiers, 11 bridges along the G-219 highway have been named after these soldiers.

A few days before the naming of the places in memory of the soldiers, Chinese military commander Qi Fabao had attended the Congress of the ruling Communist Party of China (CPC) as a delegate. Fabao was injured in a clash with Indian troops in Galwan Valley in June 2020. A part of the video footage of the PLA’s Galvan clash was shown on a giant screen in the ‘Great Hall of the People’ on 16 October, the opening day of the Congress of the CPC. Fabao was also shown in this video.

In the CPC Congress, President Xi Jinping was elected General Secretary of the party for a record third term. India has consistently maintained that peace and tranquility along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) are vital for the overall development of bilateral relations.

Indian and Chinese armies have held 16 rounds of Corps Commander-level talks to resolve the long-standing border standoff. The eastern Ladakh border standoff began on May 5, 2020, following violent clashes in the Pangong Lake areas.
