Beijing: China Foreign Minister Wang Yi on Monday called on the US to lift the ban on trade and people-to-people contact. In the areas of Taiwan, Hong Kong, Xinjiang, and Tibet, China considers this ban as an unnecessary intervention by the US. Wang’s statement on US-China relations from a foreign ministry forum comes at a time when China is pressuring US President Joe Biden’s administration to withdraw the confrontational steps taken by his predecessor Donald Trump.

These include complaints related to business and technology that caused Trump to raise taxes on goods imported from China in 2017 or ban the exchange of Chinese technology companies and educational programs. Trump also extended military and diplomatic relations with Taiwan, which China calls its territory. Trump also banned Chinese officials in Xinjiang alleging atrocities against Muslim minorities and suppressing independence in Hong Kong.

Wang told diplomats, experts, and journalists at the Lanting Forum, “We know that the new US administration is reviewing and assessing its foreign policy, so we expect US policymakers to keep pace with the times, Will look at the attitude of the world, abandon the partisan attitude, will not take undue doubts and will return to the old policy regarding China to ensure better progress in Sino-US relations. President Biden has also stressed improving relations with China and softening American diplomacy. However, it is not clear whether he will make any changes in US policies regarding China.
