Moscow: The Russian Kremlin has welcomed the proposal of US President Joe Biden to extend the duration of the Nuclear Weapon Control Treaty with the US (Kremlin). The deadline for this treaty is going to expire in less than two weeks.

Russian President Vladimir Putin’s spokesman, Dmitry Peskov, said that Russia was in favor of extending the duration of the treaty and wanted to see the details of the US proposal. The White House said on Thursday that Biden proposed to extend the duration of the ‘New Start’ treaty to Russia for five years.

The treaty was signed in 2010 by then US President Barack Obama and then Russian President Dmitry Medvedev. Under the treaty, each country cannot have more than 1,550 deployed nuclear armaments. The treaty expires on February 5.
