Kolkata: The health of BCCI President and former Team India captain Sourav Ganguly has suddenly deteriorated. He was admitted to Woodland Hospital in Kolkata.
According to Dr. Aftab Khan, Ganguly will be monitored for 24 hours and he is fully conscious. He has two blockages in his heart for which he will be treated.
Dr. Saroj Mandal, who is treating the former batsman, said, “He had a mild heart attack but his condition is now stable.” Many of his tests need to be done. We are looking at whether angioplasty is needed. Also we will have to see if Ganguly needs to install a stent or not. ”
Ganguly has been admitted to the Critical Care Unit (CCU) of the hospital. After a workout session on Friday evening, he complained of chest pain and family members took him to the hospital after such a problem again this afternoon. According to hospital sources, a team of five doctors has been formed for the treatment of Ganguly. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has expressed concern over Ganguly’s hospitalization.
Mamta tweeted, “Ganguly was sad to hear the news of a mild heart attack and his hospitalization. Wish to recover them soon and completely. My prayers are with him and his family. “
Ganguly has been admitted to the hospital at a time when speculation is rife about his entry into politics ahead of the state assembly elections to be held in April-May this year. According to people associated with the political world of the state, Ganguly can join the Bharatiya Janata Party. The former batsman, however, never expressed his intentions to enter politics.
Ganguly was elected president during the BCCI General Assembly meeting in Mumbai in October 2019, ending the 33-month controversial tenure of the Supreme Court-appointed Committee of Administrators (COA). Ganguly is the 39th president of the BCCI. He replaces CK Khanna who was the interim head of the board since 2017.
Ganguly’s tenure was initially nine months old but he and board secretary Jai Shah continue in their positions as the Supreme Court has not yet decided on the BCCI’s plea seeking amendment to the new constitution. The new constitution limits the age and tenure of office bearers as per the recommendations of the Lodha Committee. The former cricketer held several positions in the Bengal Cricket Association before this. He became the secretary of the union in 2014.
