Anti-hijab protesting group attacked with 73 ballistic missiles

Tehran: Even after 12 days have passed since the death of Mahsa Amini, a student detained for wearing a hijab, the ruckus in Iran has not stopped. Meanwhile, Iran’s military has launched missile and drone strikes on Kurdish fighters supporting the demonstrations. According to a report in Iran’s state media, the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) Ground Force has carried out 73 ballistic missiles and dozens of suicide drone strikes in Kurdistan one after the other. The IRGC alleges that the Komala Party of Kurdistan is extending its support to the violent anti-hijab protests going on in the country. These attacks were carried out on 42 different points in Kurdish areas.

After launching the attacks on Saturday, the IRGC said in a statement that the Kurdish groups were smuggling weapons into Iran amid ongoing unrest over the death of a 22-year-old Iranian woman in police custody. The IRGC further said that they had to carry out these attacks on the request of Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) officials not to take appropriate action. However, no information has been revealed about how many people have lost their lives in these attacks.

Demonstrations started in Kurdish areas
Anti-hijab protests, which began in the Kurdish-populated northwestern regions of Iran, gradually spread to 50 cities and towns, including the capital. Iran’s Islamic Revolution Guards Corps has carried out the heavy bombing of Kurdish areas due to the unrest in Amini’s home province of Kurdistan. Before the attack, a senior IRGC official had also spoken of action against the ongoing protests in Kurdish areas.

‘Insult to Islamic sanctity’
The Islamic Revolution Guards Corps has blamed Kurdish fighters for the ongoing violent demonstrations in Iran. State media, quoting the IRGC, reported that the Kurds were involved in the violence in Iranian cities. The IRCG reported that the fighters are insulting Islamic sanctity through the ongoing anti-hijab protests in the country.

More than 40 people died
The police are using heavy force to stop the demonstrations that broke out after the growing discontent against the hijab. In the anti-hijab demonstrations taking place in Iran, many women are seen setting the hijab on fire, due to which the police are continuously firing tear gas and firing at the protesters. According to government media figures, 41 people have lost their lives in these demonstrations so far.
