
London: Under a minor reshuffle in UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s cabinet, Indian Origin Trade Minister Alok Sharma has retained the sole chairman of COP 26 He has renounced his cabinet to hold the post. COP 26 is the United Nations Conference on Climate Change which will take place in Glasgow, Scotland in November.
Born in Agra, Sharma has had dual roles so far, but now he will fully focus on this summit. It is believed to be the largest summit ever to be hosted by Britain, in which representatives of about 200 countries including India will participate.
Downing Street (Prime Minister’s Office) said on Friday that Johnson had asked Sharma to take the lead in coordinated global action to take charge of the event and meet the high expectations in dealing with climate change. Sharma said, “The biggest challenge of our time is climate change and we need to work together to create a clean and green world and improve it for the present and future generations.”

He said, “Through the UK chairmanship of COP 26 we have a great opportunity to work together with our friends and our partners and achieve our goals.” Seeing the importance of tackling climate change, the Prime Minister has asked me to put all my energy into this goal and I am very happy with it. ”
