New Delhi: A 37-year-old Air India pilot, Captain Himanil Kumar, suffered a fatal heart attack at the Air India office in Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport on Thursday. He was undergoing a training course for a different type of aircraft after returning from the Diwali holidays.
According to sources, the incident occurred around 11:35 am on Level 3 of the Air India office, where Captain Kumar felt chest pain and collapsed. His colleagues performed CPR and rushed him to Medanta Medical Centre, but he could not be revived. He was declared dead by Dr. Naveen.
Captain Kumar had a valid medical certificate and had passed a medical checkup on August 23, 2023. He was not facing any fatigue issues during his flight duties, as per the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA). He was in the process of transitioning from the A320 type aircraft to the B777 full type aircraft and was taking a ground technical course from October 03, 2023.
This is the third case of a young pilot dying of a heart attack in the last three months. In October, an Indigo pilot preparing to fly to Pune collapsed at the boarding gate of Nagpur airport and died. In the same month, a former SpiceJet captain also passed away while traveling as a passenger from Delhi to Doha.
