Tinsukia: A 35-year-old tourist died after falling while ‘paragliding’ at a makeshift resort set up on the Dibru river in the Tinsukia district of Assam. Officials gave this information on Thursday. Official sources said the resort was set up illegally on the foothills of the Dibru river in Gujjan as the area falls under the eco-sensitive Dibru-Saikhowa National Park area. Various adventure sports activities like ‘paragliding’ were being done here. The paraglider has been identified as Pankaj Gogoi.
Gogoi fell down on Wednesday afternoon when the jeep pulling the parachute got stuck in the sand of the river for “some reason”. Gogoi was seriously injured and died on the way to the hospital, an official said. Locals allege that the resort was established illegally and is owned by a businessman and politician.

A local person, who did not wish to be named, said, “We have complained to the district administration several times. Recently, a team of forest department inspected the resort to check whether it was being run as per government guidelines or not, but still, nothing happened.”
