New Delhi: At least 45,026 women committed suicide in the country in 2021, of which more than half were housewives. According to the latest report released by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), a total of 1,64,033 people committed suicide across the country in 2021, of which 1,18,979 were males.

According to the data, “Women who committed suicide mostly (23,178) are housewives, followed by girl students (5,693) and daily wage earners (4,246).” The highest number of suicides by housewives was reported in Tamil Nadu (3,221 out of 23,179), Madhya Pradesh (3,055), and Maharashtra (2,861 suicides). These are 13.9 percent, 13.2 percent, and 12.3 percent, respectively, of the suicides by housewives in 2021.

Of those who committed suicide, 66.9 percent (1,09,749 out of 1,64,033) were married, while 24.0 percent were unmarried (39,421). Widow and widower, divorcee, and estranged spouse of the total suicide victims were 1.5 percent (2,485), 0.5 percent (788), and 0.5 percent (871) respectively in 2021. The ratio of women to suicide victims in the year 2021 was 72.5: 27.4, which is higher than in the year 2020 (70.9: 29.1).

At the same time, the proportion of female victims of suicide was higher in marriage-related issues (especially dowry issues), impotence and infertility. According to the report, persons under the age group of 18-30 years and those below 30-45 years are among the most vulnerable groups to commit suicide. 34.5 percent and 31.7 percent of suicides occurred in these age groups, respectively.

According to the NCRB, family problems (3,233), love affairs (1,495), and illness (1,408) are the main causes of suicide among children under the age of 18 years. According to the data, a total of 28 transgenders also committed suicide in 2021. According to the data, family problems and illness were the leading causes of suicide in the year 2021. Its rates stood at 33.2 percent and 18.6 percent, respectively.

According to the NCRB, the main causes of suicide include drug abuse and alcohol addiction (6.4 percent), marriage issues (4.8 percent), love affairs (4.6 percent), bankruptcy or debt (3.9 percent), and unemployment (2.2 percent). , failure in exams (1.0 percent), professional career problems (1.6 percent), and poverty (1.1 percent).
