New Delhi: IMD Director General Mrityunjay Mohapatra told Earth Sciences Minister Jitendra Singh on Sunday that the rainfall across the country in July has been 26 percent less. Singh was also informed by the officials during his visit to the India Meteorological Department (IMD) that the IMD has 27 radars across the country and the number will reach 50 in the coming years.
The minister studied the southwest monsoon trends for an hour with the officials. He also visited the Special Satellite and Radar Sections and discussed the process of data acquisition on a real-time basis. Singh was also briefed about the change in the air quality of Delhi.
“The Director-General of IMD, Mrityunjay Mohapatra informed the minister that the monsoon rainfall in the month of June this year was 10 percent above normal, but July has received 26 percent less rainfall so far,” a statement said.
July and August, which are the four months of the rainy season, receive maximum rainfall in the country. The IMD had predicted normal rainfall in its forecast for July. After a break in Monsoon, the Southwest Monsoon started to advance again from July 8. Since then it has been raining heavily in many parts of the country.
