New Delhi: The 69th National Film Awards were declared on Thursday, honoring the best of Indian cinema in 2023. The biopic Sardar Udham, starring Vicky Kaushal as the revolutionary freedom fighter, bagged the award for Best Hindi Film. The film was praised for its realistic portrayal of Udham Singh’s life and his assassination of Michael O’Dwyer, the former Lieutenant Governor of Punjab.

The Best Actor award went to Allu Arjun for his performance in Pushpa: The Rise – Part 1, the first installment of a two-part action thriller. Allu Arjun played a lorry driver who got involved in the illegal red sanders smuggling racket. The film also won the awards for Best Action Direction and Best Choreography.

The Best Actress award was shared by Alia Bhatt and Kriti Sanon for their roles in Gangubai Kathiawadi and Mimi respectively. Alia Bhatt portrayed the titular character of Gangubai, a brothel owner and mafia queen in Mumbai’s Kamathipura area. The film also won the awards for Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Dialogue. Kriti Sanon played Mimi, a surrogate mother who faces various challenges and dilemmas during her pregnancy. The film was a remake of the 2011 Marathi film Mala Aai Vhhaychy!

The Best Feature Film award was given to Rocketry: The Nambi Effect, a biographical drama based on the life of Nambi Narayanan, a former scientist and aerospace engineer at ISRO who was falsely accused of espionage. The film was directed by and starred R. Madhavan in the lead role.

The Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment award was conferred to RRR, a period action drama set in 1920s India. The film narrated the fictional story of two legendary freedom fighters, Alluri Sitarama Raju and Komaram Bheem, played by Ram Charan and Jr NTR respectively. The film also won the award for Best Special Effects.

The Nargis Dutt Award for Best Film on National Integration was awarded to The Kashmir Files, a historical thriller that exposed the atrocities committed against Kashmiri Pandits during their exodus in 1990. The film featured Anupam Kher, Pallavi Joshi, Mithun Chakraborty, and others in pivotal roles. Pallavi Joshi also won the Best Supporting Actress award for her performance.

The Best Supporting Actor award was given to Pankaj Tripathi for his role in MM, a comedy-drama that explored the relationship between a father and his son who suffers from muscular dystrophy.
