New Delhi/Patna: The political landscape of Bihar and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) faced a profound loss with the passing of senior leader and former Deputy Chief Minister of Bihar, Sushil Kumar Modi. He succumbed to cancer on Monday, May 13, 2024, at the age of 72. Modi’s demise occurred at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi around 9:45 pm, leaving behind a legacy of significant contributions to the state’s development and the nation’s political discourse.

Sushil Kumar Modi, a prominent figure in the BJP, was revered for his role in the implementation of the Goods and Services Tax (GST), among other achievements. His political journey was marked by his participation in the 1974 student movement, which laid the foundation for his enduring commitment to public service.

Modi’s career spanned several decades, during which he held multiple key positions, including Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA), Member of the Legislative Council (MLC), and memberships in both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha. His tenure as Deputy Chief Minister from 2005 to 2013 and again from 2017 to 2020 was instrumental in driving the state’s progress.

The news of his passing has elicited a wave of condolences from across the political spectrum. Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed deep sorrow, highlighting Sushil Modi’s invaluable role in the BJP’s rise in Bihar.
