Beijing: China has strongly condemned the move by the US to appoint a special coordinator for Tibet cause. China said on Thursday that Washington’s move was a political fraud to destabilize Tibet.
It is noteworthy that US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on Wednesday named Assistant Secretary of State for Democracy, Human Rights and Labor Robert Destro as the Special Coordinator of Tibet Affairs.
Pompeo said that Destro would focus on advancing dialogue with the Communist Party of China government and the Dalai Lama in China to protect Tibet’s special religious, cultural and linguistic identity and A lot can be done to improve their respect for human rights. On the appointment of Destro, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian told the media that America’s move is like interference in China’s internal affairs.
“Making the alleged special coordinator on Tibet affairs is a complete political forgery to interfere in China’s internal affairs and destabilize Shijang (the Chinese name of Tibet),” he said. It is noteworthy that unlike earlier, Chinese authorities refer to Tibet only in the name of Shijang.
Lijian said, “China opposes it completely and will never recognize it. People from the ethnic group of Shijang are part of the larger family of the Chinese nation. “
He said, “Since peaceful independence, Shijang has rich economic development, cordial civil society and thriving culture. People are moving forward with solidarity and mutual support as well as improvement in livelihood. All the people of Tibet have full religious freedom and respect their rights and are guaranteed. ”
Lijian did not say, “We believe Tibet has a better future.” The US should stop interfering or destabilizing China’s internal affairs in the name of Tibet. China will take all necessary steps for its interests. “
Significantly, since last year, the US Donald Trump administration has been criticizing the Chinese way of dealing with Tibet, especially regarding the issue of appointment of the Dalai Lama’s successor.
In November last year, China objected to the US plan to take the issue of the Dalai Lama’s successor to the United Nations, saying Washington was “misusing” the UN forum to intervene in internal affairs. China insists that its consent is necessary in the appointment of the successor of the current Tibetan spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama (85 years).
